Gervais Hakizimana: Household of Kelvin Kiptum’s coach will obtain help from Kenya

Kenya’s authorities will donate 5m Kenyan shillings (£26,964) to help the household of athletics coach Gervais Hakizimana following his loss of life.

The Rwandan, 36, died alongside Kenyan marathon world document holder Kelvin Kiptum, whom he coached, in a highway accident on 11 February.

The announcement from Kenya’s sports activities cupboard secretary Ababu Namwamba got here as Hakizimana’s funeral was held in Kigali on Wednesday.

“In dropping Hakizimana alongside Kiptum, Kenya, Rwanda, East Africa, and Africa have misplaced huge time,” stated Namwamba.

Kiptum had set a brand new marathon document in Chicago final 12 months, clocking a time of two hours and 35 seconds to raised compatriot Eliud Kipchoge’s earlier mark over 26.2 miles (42km) by 34 seconds.

The 24-year-old celebrated alongside Hakizimana, who had begun teaching him in 2018.

“It was actually a collaboration made in heaven,” Namwamba added.

“Observing the 2 younger males, you may see this was not only a coach and an athlete. They had been brothers. Brothers in life and as they’re brothers in loss of life.

“We’ve two younger males who’ve exited the stage when the dance was simply beginning, and we rejoice their lives and can bear in mind them eternally.”

Hakizimana was buried within the presence of many Rwandan and Kenyan athletes and relations, however, to the shock of many, the Rwandan authorities was not represented on the ceremony.
